MELVIN HAN Obituary

MELVIN TUK SOO HAN Lt Colonel USAF Ret Mel was born on December 8, 1941, in Honolulu, the day after the Pearl Harbor attack. His dad assisted in evacuation at Pearl Harbor, while his mother secured a hospital ride in the city's blackout. He lived a full life until age 84. Mel is survived by his wife, Carren, daughter, Lisa Cruz, sister Kathy Miyamoto, two granddaughters, two nieces, and two step-daughters. He attended Kapahulu Bible Church, St. Elizabeth Parish where he served as an altar boy, and Holy Trinity Church. His education started at Palolo Elementary and Island Paradise School. Then on to Iolani Middle School and Iolani High School. From there he went to the University of Hawaii where he joined the ROTC. He became a commissioned officer in the United States Air Force and then obtained his Masters in Counseling and Human Development at Troy State University in Alabama. After a successful 20-year career in the Air Force, Mel retired in 1984 as a Lieutenant Colonel. His second career was with the Hawaii Occupational Safety and Health Administration where his technical knowledge and expertise provided both leadership and program support. He retired in 2004 after receiving many commendations. Mel was a very generous person and was always willing to help others. Golf and playing Chess brought joy to his life, as did ballroom dancing and movies. His favorite thing was eating out, especially a good buffet. He will be missed very much and will be remembered with love!
