MERVIN LOPES Obituary

MERVIN LIONEL LOPES Mervin Lionel Lopes, 92, passed away peacefully of natural causes on May 8, 2025, in Waikoloa, Hawai'i. Born in Nanakuli to Murial Ilima Lopes Souza, Merv lived a life rooted in aloha, humility, and family. Though known nationally for his basketball achievements, those who knew him best understood his true greatness lived off the court. A proud graduate of 'Iolani School, Merv attended Compton Junior College and San Jose State, where he played football, before earning his master's degree from the University of Hawai'i. He was drafted into the U.S. Army after college, beginning a lifetime of service and leadership. He later spent more than 30 years in the Department of Education, shaping young minds both in and out of the classroom. Merv's coaching career spanned local schoolsChaminade University, Kalaheo, and Kailua Highas well as international programs in the South Pacific Games, United Arab Emirates, Taiwan, China, and the Pete Newell Big Man Camp. But for Merv, coaching was never just about the scoreboardit was about building character. Every session started with a "Howzit!" and ended with a life lesson. Merv's proudest legacy was his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He loved fishingthrow net, lay net, or poleas long as he was near the ocean. He found peace in simplicity, joy in gatherings, and purpose in showing up for the people he loved. For those who only saw the intensity on the court, there was a softer sidecalm but firm, kind but never soft. A man who said what he meant and meant what he said. His timeless "Mervisms" live on: "It is never over til it is over." "Time is the most precious thing we have." "What you put in the washer; you get out in the dryer." "There are no victims, only volunteers." "Perfect practice makes perfect." He is preceded in death by son Kimo Lopes and is survived by his wife, Sheryl Linda Lopes; sons Merv M. Lopes, Cameron Lopes, and Paul Aiwohi; daughters Jade Bowman, Kerry Dolan, Kris Chapman, Beth (Ken) Nascimento, and Noelle (Kalani) Kaahea- Simeona; brother Leroy (Cindy) Goo; hanai brother Maile (Kande) Lopes; sister Leona Nakaanahiki; 12 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Merv Lopes Endowed Scholarship Fund through Chaminade University at www.chaminade.edu/giving, notating "Merv Lopes Scholarship Fund."

So very sad to hear of Merv Lopes passing. I have many good memories as Merv was the most important welcomed VIP Guest who at times stayed with us at our Estate while he had business on the island.

I was blessed to have met Merv and Sheryl his beautiful! wife. I always admired their fun loving, healthy relationship. Both very active and so full of life!
I was the late David Shutter´s Live in as Daves Estate Mgr. at 4747 Kahala Ave.

Dave and Merv were very close friends as most of us know.
Mervs selfless acts, I would watch him always rushing, always running through the Estate with a fruit in hand and mouth trying to get a snack in before he shot out to do his business as a mentor and his supporting the Athletes and others.,

So After hearing of his sad passing tonight fr my husband, i instantly started to flash back on all the good times I remember with Merv present at the Estate.
One time We were setting up for the "Big Man Camp" which was being held at 4747.
I still have pictures of Merv and Sheryl. Sheryl with her flowers in her hair, her white off the shoulder blouse , on her mans side with their big smiles entertaining the Pros. and star struck guests, me included.
Scotty Pitten, Shaquille O´Neil and so many others hanging out by the pool and singing into the late night. While many guests were unable to take pictures or to get signed autographs, Merv as busy as he was, was kind to lead me and my two young Nephews to the Pros. to introduce me just! so I could get pictures and have them sign my Nephews Basketballs . Because of Merv my Nephews had a experience they still haven´t forgotten.
Merv was a fixture in Dave´s sprawling 4747 Kahala Estate. We knew the man!.... when
" Merv Lopes " was flying in to stay with us, our ground keepers and myself were told to prepare! and prepare now! for his stay.
The Red Corvette Merv drove while visiting which belong to Dave had better been washed and gased up for Merv or look out!
Merv was such an amazing man. I can only believe therrs a higher power who took him to fly and fly high, called to Coach, and mentor still.
His generosity and selfless acts for others, those who knew him, Merv will never be forget

My Condolences to Sheryl and his entire Ohana.
