Nelson Kwon Obituary

NELSON YOUNG CHUL KWON Rev. Nelson Young Chul Kwon, 99, passed away peacefully May 18, 2025. Survived by wife of 62 years, Grace; sons, Nathan (Lois), Jon (Chris), James (Allyson); grandchildren, Marissa, Natalie, Nicholas; and sister, Esther (Arinaga). He is predeceased by parents Doin Kwon and Hee Kyung Lee, and siblings Margaret (Pai) and Young Man. Born and raised on Oahu, he attended Roosevelt HS; University of Hawaii; served in the Army following WWII (Philippines, Okinawa); and Wheaton College. Returning home, he served as pastor at Manoa Valley, Korean Christian, Waipahu UCC, Lihue Christian, Makiki Christian Church; supported Hawaii UCC churches statewide; taught at the Bible Institute of Hawaii; and joyfully led choirs. He was known for his deep understanding of the Bible and passion for sharing it with his students, even in the months before his passing. Nelson was a loving husband, teacher, father, and grandfather, caring for his family and serving others while deepening his love for Christ. He will be remembered for his faith, humor, and resilience. A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 26 at Makiki Christian Church. Visitation 2:30pm, Service 4:00pm, fellowship to follow.
