Sio Saipaia Obituary

I´m sittin here in the Kauai airport about to fly home to the mainland. Every time I come to Hawaii, I think of my friend Sio or "Saip" to me. And I always say to myself, "I need to reconnect with my friend." So sitting here I decided to google where he might be and just came across this obituary. I am crushed...

My story with Saip: We become fast friends my sophomore year at Loyola Marymount University after I befriended a pretty Hawaiian girl at school who introduced us. Saip became my party buddy, the good time dude, and also my enforcer! Ha! He also introduced me to another very pretty Hawaiian girl I ended up dating for a while. Palling around the LMU campus together, my boy Saip was so big and intimidating it often felt like I had a built in body guard. No one ever messed with you if Saip was present.

Our group of friends went to so many of his volleyball games to watch him play, even traveling to other schools gyms to cheer him on. To this day I have never seen an individual strike a volleyball harder than my boy. It was a sight to see. The ball would literally warp. If you know, you know. To say I am saddened to hear this news would be an incredible understatement. Saip and I had so many good times together. So many laughs. He truly was the protector and caregiver for so many. A loveable giant. And my friend....

I look back on our 30+ years of friendship fondly, and can hear your voice in my head like you´re sitting next to me. Many nights spent laughing, talking story, and on our last night together singing karaoke I think for the first time together. I will miss you deeply my friend, your presence and kindness shines brightly in my memory and your big bear hug greetings will be sorely missed. We will strive to be the kind of friend you were to the rest of us. We love you, AJ& Nat.

He was my neighbor at Halewaiolou the Senior Residences at 1331 River Street I met him with his roommate Roger Henry, Sio is very happy and accepted everything with strength I am of the last friends he met and he left a big impression of his love for God and family in my heart, I will miss him for the rest of my life, God bless him now he is meeting his parents , brothers and sisters and family and friends in Heaven!
