ALICE FUJIEDA Obituary

ALICE NARIKO MATANO FUJIEDA 91, died peacefully at home on Oct. 5, 2023 in Denver, CO. Na amida butsu. Alice was born in Waianae on Sept. 28, 1932 to Buddhist minister Rev. Konin Matano and Tamako Fujieda Matano. She grew up in Waianae, Mo'ili'ili, and Kapa'a, Kauai. During WWII she was interned at Crystal City Camp, Texas. After graduating from McKinley High School, she lived in San Francisco and Tokyo. Upon returning to Hawaii she resided in Kaneohe, Maui, Mo'ili'ili, and Kailua. Her final six years were spent in Colorado. Alice loved dance and studied ballet and tap in her youth. Her lifelong passions of gardening, sewing and reading brought her endless joy, and she was a devoted yoga practitioner for decades. She was a talented home cook, and listened to rock'n'roll till the end. She is survived by her three children Richard Kohara, James Kohara (Yasuyo), and Tamiko Theros Mackie (Andrew); grand- daughters Aya Kohara, Mina Kohara, and Ruby Mackie; and sister Florence Matano. She joins her predeceased family in the Pure Land: her parents; siblings "Betsy" Sugihara, Jane Hatta, Albert Matano, "Cherry" Matano, and Bernard Matano; granddaughter Emily Leilani Mackie; and nieces Kayo Hatta and Carrie Hatta. She was posthumously followed in December by her sister Caroline Yang. Service and celebration of life at 12PM Friday, Jan 5, 2024 at Honpa Hongwanji, Honolulu. Burial at Hawaii Memorial Park, Kaneohe at 10AM Saturday, January 6.
