Charles Ogata Obituary

CHARLES NOBUO OGATA Charles Nobuo Ogata, age 98, passed peacefully at his Kaneohe home on August 12, 2023. He was born in Koloa, Kaua'i, grew up in Kaka'ako, Oahu and graduated from McKinley High School in 1944. After WWII, Charles moved to Baltimore, MD, where he was educated and worked for Martin Company, aka Lockheed-Martin, as a Electronic Engineer. Charles returned home with his family in 1966 and worked for Comsat (Communications Satellite Corp). He was part of NASA's landing and recovery when the astronauts splashed down in the Pacific Ocean. He operated the satellites on the aircraft carriers, so events could be televised live across the nation. After retirement, Charles enjoyed working at OHA (Office of Hawaiian Affairs) and Bishop Museum. Charles is preceded in death by his wife Ruth (Betty) Ogata, sister Lillian (Takashi) Matsunami, brother Kenneth Ogata. Survived by son Kalani Ogata, daughter Lisa Ogata, brother James Ogata, sisters Ruth Kushimaejo, and Janet (Masa) Chinen, nephews and nieces. Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, Oct. 20, 2023, at the Achong Residence, 41-634 Kalanianaole Hwy., Waimanalo, HI 96795 at 11:00am. Following lunch, ashes will be scattered at Kaiona Beach Park, Waimanalo, HI. Please RSVP by Tuesday, 10/10/23 to Lisa via call/text 1 (734) 834-4654 or email: [email protected].
