KA'OHINANI KALAMA Obituary
KA'OHINANI MAE KALAMA June 23, 1985 - June 13, 2020 It is with deep sorrow and much love that we announce the passing of Ka'ohinani Mae (Segovia) Kalama, of Halawa, Hawaii, on June 13, 2020, at the age of 34. Ka'ohi was born on June 23, 1985, in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Sharon (Groaning) Tupua and Leonard Segovia. Ka'ohi attended Kamehameha Schools Kapa-lama Campus from the seventh grade and was a proud graduate of the class of 2003. She made lasting friendships, created many memories, and was honored for the opportunity afforded to her. While in high school, Ka'ohi pursued paddling as a sport where she happened to also meet the love of her life, Kaulike Kalama (also an avid paddler), who was attending McKinley High School. Ka'ohi and Kaulike shared their love for the ocean and passion for paddling, became high school sweethearts, and married on May 3, 2008. In 2005, they were blessed with their son, Kaumana Kekaulike Makoa Kalama. Unfortunately, in that same year, Ka'ohi was also diagnosed with Lupus which caused various health issues over the years. Despite that, Ka'ohi courageously fought to live a life of love and happiness. Ka'ohi was employed at the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum for 3 years as an access coordinator. Here, she developed relationships with various partners and assisted in the coordination of the many events that took place at the museum. She enjoyed her time in her position and established countless friendships along the way. Tragically, on January 19, 2020, Kaulike, a nine-year veteran of the Honolulu Police Department, lost his life in the line of duty. Ka'ohi, strong in her Christian faith, continued to persevere through one of the most diffi cult losses she encountered. Sadly, a short 5 months later, Ka'ohi passed away due to natural causes and was reunited with her love, Kaulike. Ka'ohi will forever be remembered by her beauty, warm hugs, laughter, and contagious smile, with a pua in her ear. To her many nieces and nephews, Ka'ohi was the fun aunty, and was also a loving wife, sister, daughter, and friend who always kept her loved ones close. More importantly, Ka'ohi truly embraced her role as a mother. She referred to Kaumana as her whole heart, was his fi rst love and #1 fan, and who was always present and supportive of the many sports and activities he participated in. One of Ka'ohi's proudest moments was when Kaumana was accepted to Kamehameha Schools Kapa-lama as a kindergartenerboth sharing and fulfi lling their purpose of being Warriors for life. Ka'ohi is survived by her son, Kaumana Kalama; mother, Sharon Tupua (Jesse); father, Leonard Segovia (Richella); sisters, Kapua Kahealani Evangelista (Kai) and Keolahouonalani Segovia (Ejay); brother, Kaleokalani Segovia (Casee); grand-uncle, Ron Murakami; along with numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends. She is predeceased by her husband, Kaulike Kalama, and fur baby, Kupa'a. Ka'ohi's celebration of life will be taking place on Saturday, June 17, 2023, at Bishop Memorial Chapel (Kamehameha Schools) located at 1887 Makuakane St., Honolulu, HI 96817, with family visitation from 2-3 pm and funeral services to begin at 3 pm. Aloha attire is appropriate for the occasion.
