Peter Fong Obituary

PETER CHEW KWONG FONG Peter Chew Kwong Fong was born on October 28, 1955 as the second of seven children to Arthur Sung Kong Fong and Victoria Kam Yuk Chun. He died at the age of 68 on January 1, 2024. Peter was a distinguished graduate of the University of Hawaii, where he earned his Bachelor of Business Administration with Honors, garnering recognition as the Graduation Marshall and earning the title of Outstanding Senior in Management, as well as a member of the Mortar Board National Honor Society and an ASUH Senator. He furthered his academic journey in Boston College Law School, where he contributed as a member of the editorial staff of the Boston College International & Comparative Law Review. His accolades include receiving the Ten Outstanding Young Persons Award and being featured in Who's Who in America, the World and American Law. He enjoyed all the roles/jobs he held throughout his life. One that he most cherished was when he joined his father and formed and ran the law firm of Fong & Fong for over 35 years. Throughout his career he held significant positions, including President/CEO and Director of Chun Kim Chow, Ltd., a Hawaii Business top 250 company. He also served as a Honolulu District/Family Court per diem judge for over 34 years, as well as an arbitrator and mediator for the Hawaii Circuit Court and a campaign treasurer for a Hawaii state senator. Peter's remarkable journey included his role as Chairman of the Board at Maryknoll School, a testament to his deep commitment to education and community service, culminating in his being named the 2023 Noblesse Oblige Award Honoree by Maryknoll. Embodying the principle of "noblesse oblige," (to whom much is given, much is expected) Peter underscored the belief that genuine success entails sharing one's gifts, talents, and life's journey with family, friends and humanity as a whole. His dedication extended to roles such as President and Chairman of the Board at Palolo Chinese Home, law clerk for the Hawaii Supreme Court, deputy prosecuting attorney, attorney at several different law firms, President of the Legal Aid Society of Hawaii, Chief Clerk & General Legal Counsel for the Hawaii State Senate Judiciary Committee, Chair of the Judges Salary Committee and Legislative Resource Bank for the Hawaii State Bar Association, as well as serving on the Honolulu Neighborhood Board. He was a Hearings Officer for the Disciplinary Counsel of the Supreme Court of Hawaii, General Counsel for the Hawaii Jaycees, and a member of the Waialae Country Club Golf Committee and multiple other committees. Peter was also an active alumnus of Kalani High School and a member of the auxiliary admissions committee of Boston College Law School. He was a member of the West Honolulu Rotary Club, past president of Tu Chiang Sheh Fraternity, a member of FF Fraternity, a delegate to the Governor's Conference on Hawaii's international role, and a delegate to the Hawaii Judicial Foresight Congress. He was a member of the Hawaii Developer's Council, American Judicature Society, Hawaii Supreme Court Historical Society, Hawaii Trial Judges Association, National Council Juvenile and Family Court Judges, Research Board of Advisors, National Association of District Attorneys, and Supreme Court of the United States Court History Society. He was a Board Member & legal advisor for Yin Sit Sha (Punaluu Chinese Rice Growers Association) and See Dai Doo Society member. He was a devout Catholic and had an audience at the Vatican with Pope Benedict. He passed away peacefully in the presence of his loving familya true public servant and warriorfighting for his health until his last breath. Peter was much beloved by his late parents, siblings, nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews. He was an exceptional son, brother, uncle, great uncle, nephew, grandson, community member, attorney, leader and person. We will all miss his joyous laughter and spontaneous generosity. He cared deeply about helping others and was a loyal friend. He was an accomplished man, devoted to a life of service and though always more interested in socializing than golfing, he still managed to hit a hole in one three times! He is survived by his six siblings: Wendy F Tsou (Richard), Valerie W H Chang (Glenn), Andrew C O Fong (Jenifer), Carolyn F Chang (Hubert), Mary W H Nakamoto (Dean), Daniel C H Fong (Corrie), 15 nieces and nephews, and 7 great nieces and great nephews. I met Peter in August 2023 at our lively Zumba party. Music, fun, great food and decorations to match our Barbie Movie theme. Peter chatted and shared his background, family, and his aspiration which was to help others. His humility and caring nature was clear. I heard he was ill but he seemed to enjoy the food, and music, even danced with me. He enjoyed the pho, which was homemade and fresh, and seemed to delight in all the dishes. I am so happy to have met this wonderful person who seemed to enjoy life so much that evening. I was very surprised and saddened to see that he passed away, shortly after this party under the stars. I hope that he is still with us in spirit and look forward to feeling his presence at our next party. Aloha Peter and mahalo for gracing our lives with your kind spirit.

THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES<br />I was born at the right time to have met great soul.

I cannot begin to bring myself to fathom the enormity if this man's loss. Peter Fong was smart, successful and generous. I still have disbelief beyond grief.

Aloha Oe to brother in Christ, (Saint!) Peter! Indeed, a saint to so many here on earth. Deserving of all the wonderful praise shared here in the eulogy of his rich life, and all the testimonies! I too noticed many of these distinguished qualities of character and actions, especially in my fundraiser event life, where he was SO consistent and pro-active. Loved telling him my wife and I were dropping 'coin' in his McCully Shopping Center restaurant's coffers, enjoying so much fun dining there over all these great years. Sad to see him gone too early, as we are the same age. Potent reminder we all need to be reconciled to God through Jesus before our time, which none can predict. Long live his fine memories! Mahaloha. PTL/JET

early Dec. 2023 invited Peter this unique party.
To my surprise Peter said it was 3 or 4 houses away from his old family home. He knew all the neighbors on this very short street. Talk about his fond memory of growing up on Hibiscus street. He was very happy , talked to everyone that night , told me he tried all the food and someone was told me he danced too.
I told Peter why the stars lined up for you tonight? Peter grin and said your my good friend.
This photo for me : Peter's happiest moments , didn't see him dance.

Peter was a true gentlemen, and such a good person. He will be missed by so many of us. He left us too young and too soon. God bless him and all of his family. We dedicated a tree in memory of Peter.

Peter called me to tell me how much he loved and valued my dad´s friendship like a brother several days before my dad passed away. Then he passed a few days soon after. I also told him that my dad felt the same way and loved him as a brother. It was so truly heartbreaking to lose both of them days apart but knowing they are together now they are happy.

Peter was my classmate all the way back to Aina Haina Elementary School. We became reacquainted n 2017 and I found him to be generous and kind. Peter also took a leadership role in our last few Kalani High School reunions, including one just last October. I don't think any of us imagined he would be leaving us soon. Peter, I wish you great love and joy on the other side. Thank you for all you did while you were here, including helping me to launch my non-profit effort.

Shortly after losing his mother, I lost mine. Even in his own grief he helped me through mine. He was there for me to talk to and he shared words of consolation. Peter was always kind, with an easy smile and good humored soul. Peter was loved and admired by many and will be sorely missed by all who knew him. RIL Peter.

Met Peter a few years ago through my brother (Coyne) who was his HS classmate. Peter's humbleness and sincereness stood out. He always greeted me with his grinnish smile and always had time to have a friendly conversation. Very rare to meet persons this nice and caring for others. We instantly bonded and consider him a great friend and a good role model for me to follow. I now know why my brother always said that Peter was his best friend. We need more people like Peter in this world.

Peter was an old friend from the Jaycees and knew my late wife Barbara from BC LAW School. He helped Barb tremendously over the years until her death in 2016. It was a honor to have him deliver the eulogy at her Memorial Mass.
